Network Rail consults on ‘Croydon Bottleneck’

NETWORK Rail’s proposed solutions to reduce congestion in and around Croydon were opened to public consultation in November.

The Croydon area is reported to be the busiest and most congested part of Britain’s rail network, with 30% more passengers and trains passing through it each day than London Euston and King’s Cross stations combined.

Network Rail is developing proposals to increase the capacity, flexibility and resilience of the routes through Croydon to provide better reliability and punctuality. Punctuality on the Brighton Main Line is the lowest of any major route as the bottleneck magnifies the impact of even the most minor incident or delay, regularly disrupting the 300,000 passengers who travel on the Brighton Main Line and its branches each weekday.

If approved, the scheme will involve the construction of additional tracks to provide more flexibility and capacity, extra platforms at an expanded and modernised East Croydon station, and a series of new flying junctions to replace the current arrangement between Selhurst, Norwood Junction and East Croydon, where lines from London Victoria and London Bridge converge and head for the South Coast, Sussex and Surrey.
