HS2 has been a controversial project since plans emerged in 2009, marked by delays, environmental concerns, and spiralling costs.

HS2 could cost more than £100 billion and may not open until 2039, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has announced.

The machine digging the 10-mile tunnel under the Chiltern Hills broke through on Tuesday.
