STROUDLEY ‘A1X’ 0-6-0T No. 32678 will be undergoing a thorough and fast-track overhaul at the Kent & East Sussex Railway’s (K&ESR) Rolvenden works this winter.

Work will start before the end of the year and taking around six months to complete.

The 1880-built ‘Terrier’ is one of a pair owned by the Terrier Trust, and performed the final duties of its current boiler certificate at the Avon Valley Railway’s end-of-season gala on November 10-11.

It shared the spotlight with the National Railway Museum’s LSWR Beattie 2-4-0 well tank No. 30587, with the work marking No. 32678’s first trip away from the K&ESR in more than a decade.

The overhaul is not expected to throw up any major causes for concern as the diminutive loco received an extensive refurbishment of its motion during its last overhaul, while its boiler underwent a full re-tube in early 2017.

The Terrier Trust’s other former LBSCR ‘A1X’ – No. 3 Bodiam – remains in store at Rolvenden awaiting overhaul. However, both the trust and the K&ESR hope to have it back in service in time for its 150th anniversary in 2022.
