APT-P motor power car No. 49006 has been restored to its former glory.
It arrived at the Crewe Heritage Centre (CHC) from storage at the now-closed Electric Railway Museum, Coventry in dreadful external condition at the beginning of the year.
Restoration started in mid April when the former National Collection vehicle was formally handed over to the railway centre. A target of early August for completion was set to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the six-car APT EMU going into preservation at Crewe.
Firstly, the bodywork was jet washed to get rid of loose material, this job taking around three days. The large, flat, windowless sides were then sanded back to bare metal as much as possible.
