THE Mangapps Railway, Essex has acquired two former Network Rail Class 31s – Nos. 31105 (D5523) and 31233 (D5660).

Class 31 No. 31105 made its preservation debut at the Mangapps Railway when used on the last two days of the museum’s ‘Santa’ specials. Despite teething problems the previous day the loco worked perfectly on Christmas Eve, as seen here, acting as a ‘Thunderbird’ loco, as well as conveying Santa to and from his grotto at Old Heath station. The privately owned railway has lost all of its big diesels of Classes 31, 33 and 47 in recent times, after being transferred to new homes with longer operating lines.

The Class 31s are in good condition, and their bright yellow NR liveries will be retained until at least the spring.
