Drive a steam train at Great Central Railway

Leicestershire’s Great Central Railway is offering the chance to take control of a steam locomotive, diesel locomotive or heritage railcar as part of its Drive a Loco experience.

There are a variety of packages available, all of which include a welcome briefing, lunch, a guided tour of the Loco Works, a visit to Loughborough’s signalbox, a presentation certificate and 12-month membership of Friends of Great Central Mainline.

Depending on the package chosen, there’s also an opportunity for the driver to bring guests with them to share the experience. Choose from driving experiences in a steam locomotive, steam train, heritage diesel locomotive, heritage diesel train or heritage railcar.

Simon Bracewell, the railway’s head of marketing and communications, said: “Our Drive a Loco experience offers the opportunity for people to create the most wonderful memories. Our line features double tracks, signals, and stations, creating an environment straight from the pages of childhood dreams. It’s always a joy to see how people react when they are at the controls and starting their journey for the first time!”
