IÉ passenger numbers rise with €100m new stock purchase on the cards

IARNROD Éireann-Irish Rail (IÉ) has reported positive growth on passenger numbers during 2018, with Intercity, DART and Commuter services all seeing an upturn in figures.

Passengers travelling on Intercity trains increased by 8.4% to 12.4million during the year, while Commuter and DART services saw growth of between 4% and 5%.

Some 48m passenger journeys were made on IÉ trains during the year, comparing well to the 45.5m in 2017 and the 38.2m in 2010.

Having slumped to a low of 36.7m in 2012/13, numbers have increased steadily each year since; 2018 showing the largest percentage jump since 2010.

The expansion of services through Dublin’s Phoenix Park Tunnel, together with the introduction of the 10-minute DART timetable, has undoubtedly helped boost numbers during the year.
