The Epping Ongar Railway’s annual three-day Steam Gala will feature visiting “giants of steam” from the Southern region, which will be working hard on the railway’s challenging gradients later this month.

The Steam Gala will take place from September 19-21 and feature an intensive scheduled of locomotive action, showcasing the home fleet and guest locomotives.
Among the locomotives visiting for the event is Bulleid pacific locomotive 34072 “257 Squadron,” the Maunsell Schools Class locomotive 926 “Repton,” and the Hunslet locomotive 3781.

These will join the Great Western Hall class locomotive 4953 “Pitchford Hall.”
Designed by the Southern Railway’s Chief Mechanical Engineer Oliver Bulleid, the Bulleid pacific locomotives were known for their unique “air-smoothed” casings and innovative features like chain-driven valve gear. The class included locomotives named after Royal Air Force squadrons and individuals who fought in the Battle of Britain. The Maunsell Schools Class, designed by Richard Maunsell, were the most powerful 4-4-0 type locomotives ever built in Europe.
An intensive train service will run daily from 9:45 AM to 5:30 PM, with late-evening services on Saturday 20 September with a special Real Ale train in association with CAMRA.
Vintage London buses will provide connections from Epping Underground station and Shenfield National Rail station.
Unlimited travel tickets for all train and bus services are available at a discount when purchased in advance. Adult tickets are £28.50 in advance or £32 on the day, with child and family tickets also available. Children under 3 travel for free.
