New ‘Traxx’ enters passenger service in Israel and Germany

NEW ‘Traxx3’-design electric locos have entered service in both Israel and Germany in recent months.

Bombardier is building both loco types at its Kassel factory in Germany. Initially, the company offered AC-versions of its new ‘Traxx3’ design, but is also now building a DC version and testing multi-voltage prototypes.

Israeli Railways has 62 new 6MW 25kV AC ‘Traxx 3’ electric locos on order from Bombardier to operate services on its network, which is being electrified. The only operational electrified section is the new double track A1 fast line, which opened between Ben Gurion Airport (near Tel Aviv) and Jerusalem’s new Jerusalem-Yitzhak Navon station on September 25, 2018.
