Watercress Line recruiting for two key infrastructure roles

The Watercress Line is looking to recruit an experienced Railway Manager and Permanent Way Manager, with salaries of up to £65,000 and £40,000 respectively.

The heritage railway is currently advertising two senior infrastructure vacancies covering some of the key areas required to keep the line operating safely and effectively.

Railway Manager

The Railway Manager role offers a salary of up to £65,000 per annum depending on experience and is based primarily at Ropley and Medstead, with some working at Alresford.

Reporting directly to the CEO and forming part of the Senior Management Team, the Railway Manager will be responsible for the delivery and forward planning of railway works and projects covering:

  • Rolling stock engineering
  • Permanent Way
  • Signals & Telecoms
  • Estates

The successful candidate will be accountable for infrastructure and engineering activity across The Watercress Line.

The objectives of the role include providing safe and compliant railway infrastructure and rolling stock, managing and developing trained and competent staff and volunteers, overseeing maintenance work banks, and helping to develop strategic investment in railway infrastructure, estates and rolling stock.

Permanent Way Manager

The Permanent Way Manager position offers a salary of up to £40,000 per annum depending on experience.

The role is based at Medstead and Four Marks Station and requires on-site working.

The successful applicant will be responsible for management of the Permanent Way up to the edge of the railway boundary, covering routine inspection and maintenance, work planning and delivery of major projects and renewals.

The role includes responsibility for trackwork, drainage, fencing and vegetation management, along with agreed levels of civils maintenance.

It will also involve contributing to the identification of issues and movement, including earthworks monitoring and reporting, as well as managing minor bridge issues and bridge strikes.

Other responsibilities include planning and organising work, leading and developing teams, managing assets and budgets, safety and compliance, and liaison with external stakeholders.
